Klamath Falls Tree City USA Event
Tree City USA is a designation that cities can earn by meeting minimum requirements for community forestry programs at the municipal level. A program of the National Arbor Day Foundation and sponsored by the Oregon Department of Forestry, Tree City USA recognizes cities that have developed programs that plant and care for trees.

There are Tree City USA communities in every state.  To obtain Tree City USA status, a community must adopt a tree ordinance, appoint a board, department, or commission to advise the city on tree issues, spend $2 per capita on community forestry activities, and hold an Arbor Day celebration.

In addition to Tree City USA status, the following ten Oregon cities - the most ever - also received the Tree City Growth Award in 2009:  Baker City, Beaverton, Corvallis, Eagle Point, Echo, LaGrande, Lebanon, Medford, Tigard, and Wilsonville. These Growth Awards recognize cities for environmental improvement and the completion of special projects over the year, and for encouraging higher levels of tree care.

Oregon's "Tree Cities"
Each year, the winning cities receive signs and certificates recognizing their achievements at local ceremonies that take place during Oregon's designated Arbor Week - the first full calendar week of April - or on National Arbor Day, which is observed on the last Friday in April.

Since 1976, 52 Oregon cities have obtained status as Tree City USA communities, with Dallas, Lincoln City, and Gresham being the latest "new additions" to the list certified as Tree Cities in 2009.

Learn more about becoming certified as a Tree City USA Community by visiting the Tree City USA web page on the National Arbor Day Foundation's web site, or contact:
